Clinical shadowing in rural and underserved communities is a privilege. This guide is designed to help you prepare, act professionally, and make the experience meaningful for both you and the physician hosting you.

Before Your Shadowing Experience
Confirm All Requirements
Complete all required paperwork before your shadowing date
Contact the office manager to confirm clearance, arrival time, and logistics
Review any clinic-specific instructions provided to you
Do not arrive without confirmation that you have been cleared to shadow.
Prepare Ahead of Time
Learn about the physician’s specialty and practice setting
Review basic medical terminology relevant to the field
Bring a small notebook if permitted (no patient identifiers)
Plan your transportation to arrive 10–15 minutes early
Professional Expectations
Dress Code
Unless told otherwise, dress in business professional attire:
Clean, modest, and well-fitted clothing
Closed-toe shoes
Minimal jewelry and fragrance
Scrubs should only be worn if specifically requested by the physician or office staff.
Conduct & Attitude
Students are expected to:
Conduct themselves professionally at all times
Be respectful, attentive, and engaged
Follow all instructions from the physician and staff
Maintain a positive and flexible attitude
Remember: you are representing both yourself AND the Rural Health Initiative.
During the Shadowing Experience
Patient Privacy & Confidentiality
Do not discuss patient information outside of the clinic
Do not record, photograph, or document patient details
Step out immediately if asked
HIPAA compliance is mandatory at all times.
Communication
Speak only when appropriate
Ask questions at suitable times (often between patients)
Never interrupt patient care
Address physicians and staff respectfully
If unsure, observe first.
What to Expect in Rural Settings
Rural medicine often looks different than urban practice. You may observe:
Broader scopes of practice
Closer physician-patient relationships
Limited resources requiring creativity and adaptability
Strong ties between healthcare and community life
Be open-minded and curious — these differences are part of what makes rural medicine unique and impactful.
Cancellations & Reliability
By registering for a shadowing opportunity, students agree to:
Not cancel within 48 hours of the scheduled experience
Communicate promptly if an emergency arises
Late cancellations may result in removal from future opportunities.
After Your Shadowing Experience
Show Gratitude
Thank the physician and staff in person
Simple gratitude goes a long way.
Reflect
Take time to think about:
What surprised you
What challenged you
How this experience shaped your understanding of rural medicine
These reflections will be valuable as you continue your pre-med journey.
Final Reminder
Shadowing opportunities exist because physicians generously donate their time. Treat every experience with professionalism, respect, and appreciation.
